EVOLVING FROM BIODEGRADABLE to COMPOSTABLE 'Biodegradable' refers to matter that breaks down into water, carbon dioxide and biomass within a reasonable amount of time (over 1 year) in a 'natural' environment. Therein lies the problem. Biodegradable products don't end up in "natural" environments, but rather in landfills which are not conducive to the breakdown of biodegradable waste but rather built to “entomb” the waste, preventing exposure to air, moisture and sunlight - critial factors in the breakdown process. The term 'biodegradable' has no legal enforcement or definition so the term is used loosely by many manufacturers. 'Compostable' products are biodegradable, but additionally, when they break down, they release valuable nutrients into the soil, aiding the growth of trees and plants. These products degrade within several months (vs. more than a year) in nature or in industrial composting facilities and produce no toxic residues. At Optimum Packaging Solutions we're committed to creating and sourcing compostable products. We have access to cutting edge resins to fill your "green" needs. |
